Mobile Phone Web Connection
It is possible to use any mobile phone with a USB modem connection to get an internet connection, but for this project, we are using the Motorola MPx220, a "smartphone" that runs on a Windows Mobile Operating System.
Motorola MPx220 Dial-up Connection Setup
Download the driver before you start. Place it in an obvious location to find later.
Make sure the USB modem link connection is ACTIVE on the phone. Connect the phone to the USB port. The Modem Link can be accessed by going to
. Be sure Connection is set as USB, not IrCOMM. Then, press
, and select
select DONE after you have selected ACTIVATE. This will deactivate the connection. Instead, press the
Connect the phone to USB port. A "Found New Hardware Wizard" will pop up. Select "
Install from a list or specific location
" and click

. The next page should be a list of hardware types. Choose "

Be sure that the modem link on the phone says
on the phone. On the computer, go to

" button and AT commands will appear, indicating that the modem is properly installed. Then, click on
to exit the Modem Properties window.
To utilize the modem, go to
on the left-hand side of the window, select "
Create a new connection
." A "New Connection Wizard" window will pop up. Click
. In the next page, choose the option for "
Connect to the network at my workplace
" which has " . . . using dial-up . . ." in the description. Click
. Be sure the "
" option is selected. Click
. A company name is not necessary to include; click
again. For the phone number to dial, type in
, and click
. On the next page, be sure "
" is selected, click
, and then
Once again, be sure the USB modem link connection is
on the phone.
Go back to the "
" window on the computer. Double-click on the new "
" option you have just created, and in the pop-up window, just click on the "
" button. The username and password fields should be empty.
Now behold your new dial-up internet connection. It's slow, but at least you can connect to the internet now. Once you are done with using the internet, be sure to deactivate the USB Modem Link Connection on the phone to avoid potential problems with ActiveSync.
